KALAMARES / CALAMARES
(Deep fried sliced squid)
Angelo Boyles
Most Filipinos are always
down to street foods. When we are still young, our mother said that it would be
bad for us, because it's not clean enough and vendors puts plenty of oil which
is consumed by the food itself, even though our mother told that to us we still
intend to buy it. Why? Because we’re filipinos, it's our thing and culture.
Even if we know the possible consequences we still eat and buy it.
One of the most famous
street food in the Philippines is Kalamares or deep fried squid. Calamares is
the Filipino version of the Mediterranean breaded fried squid dish, Calamari.
So, what is the difference between Calamares and Calamari besides the spelling?
Well, there is no big difference at all. The only difference that I noticed is
the dipping sauce. Calamari is often dipped in marina or other tomato based
sauce while Filipino Calamares is dipped in spiced vinegar or toyo mansi (©
2009 - 2019 · PANLASANG PINOY). By spending fifteen (15) pesos on it you can
already have five (5) pieces of kalamares because one (1) kalamares cost three
(3) pesos only, and besides of being super affordable kalamares is also
delicious most specially with they're traditional sweet sauce and vinegar.
Kalamares can be a snack, dish or even "pulutan" or beer food in
drinking sessions. I think it can help to reduce the poverty in the Philippines
because it's so affordable and yummy that it can be a substitute to dishes for
lunch or dinner and consumers won't need to buy expensive foods if fast food
restaurants of groceries to cook. Most students can relate to it because
instead of buying expensive foods for snack or lunch they intend to just bring
rice and buy kalamares or other street foods because just like what I said it's
very affordable and delicious.
All in all kalamares is
one truly afordable yet it is also delicious, it can be a subtitute to a dish
to partner with rice for lunch or dinner, it can be a snack in the afternoon
around 3pm. Kalamares is a one of a kind street food, u did not just eat a delicious
street food you also become full, save money and help to reduce poverty in the
Philippines.
