BANANACUE

BANANACUE
Micah Maomay

Bananas comes in different shapes and sizes. Even with this simple fruit, we can create any type of dish that we want, from soft serves to drinks and from baked to fried. An example of this is one of the popular street foods in the Philippines which is called bananacue, along with kwek-kwek, isaw, fish ball, turon and etc.

Bananacue is a deep-fried banana coated in caramelized sugar. This food is very popular and a favourite snack food especially of the young people because of its delicious taste and affordability. The type of banana that has been used to cook this tasty food is saba (cardaba bananas) which originated in the Philippines. This kind of banana is primarily a type of cooking banana but it can also be eaten raw. Due to the popularity of this street food, a lot of people are now interested to do a business with this because of how easy it is to make at home.

In connection to this, we were tasked by our teacher to think of a dish or any type of food that we think that may help alleviate poverty in the Philippines. As we all know, poverty is prevalent in our society, wherein families struggle to provide the needs of their children even just for a day. So the first food that really came into my mind is bananacue. In my opinion, bananacue can help alleviate poverty in our country because of its benefits especially to families. Because of this, they can have a source of income that will help their family in order to meet their basic needs. Through the business that they can do, they would be able to save money and buy clothes and enough food that will feed the whole family. And as they continue their business, they would have an opportunity to keep some money in order to help their sons and/ or daughters attend to school because of it. Selling bananacue will not only help them meet their needs, but also, help them rise through poverty.

As simple as it seems to be, bananacue has the ability not only stuff our stomachs from hunger but can also help families that can support them physically and financially which will help them be stable and rise slowly, but surely even with just selling fried bananas. So if you buy bananacue next time try buying more than one because maybe you’ll be able to help them more than you can imagined, but seriously, try them!!! I recommend it, it’s really delicious and affordable.

So if you are interested to try and make this at home I have the ingredients that you’ll need to prepare them.

INGREDIENTS:
§ 1 large bunch saba bananas (15-20)
§ 1 cup brown sugar
§  Oil for frying

INSTRUCTIONS:
1)     Heat the oil over medium low heat. Add the brown sugar and wait until the sugar starts to caramelize.
2)     Place the bananas in the oil and fry them with the brown sugar so until they are covered with the sticky brown sugar and a deep golden color.

Hope this helps. Thank you for reading!!
